October 2012 - President's Message

Dear ISACA® Kettle Moraine members, colleagues, and friends,

Our November event is in just a few weeks, which means that the end of the year is right around the corner.

In this issue:

  • Results of Member Survey
  • November and December Events
  • January Event – Get a Jumpstart on Your 2013 CPEs!
  • Reminder – Renew Your Membership!
  • New and Transferred Members

Results of Member Survey

Thank you to all of you who completed the member survey last month. The results have already helped us shape which topics we are planning on delivering for the spring. Many members indicated an interest in more technical topics for the monthly events.

A number of members also said that they have not visited the chapter’s web site. The site is full of useful information about ISACA International, Membership, Past Events (with materials), and information on Upcoming Events. The job board remains active with new positions recently posted.

If you were unable to complete the survey but have feedback, please feel free to e-mail any of us on the board.

November and December Events

Our monthly events will continue to be at the BMO Training Institute at 395 N. Executive Dr. in Brookfield, which we have reserved through 2013 according to our normal monthly schedule. If you cannot attend the events in person, you can also attend remotely at the Madison site (CUNA Mutual) or at the Fox Valley site (Bemis), which allows you to still receive CPEs.

As a reminder, the topics for November and December are listed below. The invitation for the November event will be sent out tomorrow morning (Tuesday, October 23rd). If someone you know is interested in attending who is not a member, feel free to forward the invitation or have them register via the web site. A link is available on the front page.

Our November event on malware with Daimon Geopfert sounds extremely interesting. I have attended other presentations by Daimon, and I always find them entertaining and informative. Here is a copy of the summary that will be included in the event invitation.

This presentation will provide an up-to-the-minute, realistic overview of the capabilities of modern malware and the threats they pose to organizations. The material will cover historical and current trends, the criminal business models that support the expansion and evolution of malicious software, and an overview of the actual effectiveness of standard controls. (Hint: Assume they will fail and make it your goal to fail gracefully.) Expect live demonstrations of anti-virus evasion and hidden communications.

  • November 14, 2012 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
    • Malware: Markets, Money, and Trends – Daimon Geopfert – National Leader, Security and Privacy Consulting at McGladrey LLP
  • December 12, 2012 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
    • Data Security Risk Assessments – David Fanson – Director Titus

January Event – Get a Jumpstart on Your 2013 CPEs!

Each January, we hold a more technical related event that is over two days, which is offered in person only. Many members over the past few years, including in this year’s member survey, have expressed interest in having an event focused on Active Directory. We will be working with MIS Training Institute (MISTI) to bring a two-day event, January 9th and 10th, titled “Securing and Auditing Windows Active Directory Domains.”

Total CPEs are still being worked out, but last year, the two-day event was eligible for 15 CPEs. This is a great way to get an early start on your annual CPE requirements. We will be sending out invitations in the next few weeks, which will include information about the total number of CPEs and fees.

Reminder – Renew Your Membership!

For those of you with memberships that expire at the end of this year, please remember to renew your membership with ISACA International. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to e-mail me.

New and Transferred Members

As of today, we have 398 members! If you know someone who would be interested in joining ISACA, please direct them to our web site or the ISACA International site and help us bring our total membership to over 400.

Please join me in welcoming the following new and transferred members to our chapter:

  • Lisa Barsuli
  • Blake Johnson
  • Matthew Kendzior
  • Adrienne Marks
  • Srikanth Srinivasan

Sincerely,

Matt Johnson, President, ISACA Kettle Moraine Chapter
